Appliances are not standard rectangles. Handles, hinges, trim kits, door swing, venting and service connections affect the cabinetry around them.
Use the installation documents
Record cutout, rough opening, door clearance, ventilation, electrical, gas, water and drain requirements for the exact model. Retail summary dimensions may omit critical details.
Plan delivery and replacement
Measure exterior doors, stairs, corners and elevators. Consider whether a future replacement can fit the opening without removing cabinets or countertops.
Avoid overbuying capacity
Choose capacity and features based on the household’s cooking, cleaning and food-storage patterns. Large appliances can consume landing space and make a modest kitchen less functional.
Compare operating efficiency
Energy labels and certified-product programs can help compare eligible products, but actual use, local rates and maintenance also matter.
