Kitchen Renovation Cost Drivers

Understand which scope choices most strongly affect kitchen-renovation cost, schedule and risk.

The largest cost changes usually come from scope, cabinetry, labour and services—not from one decorative accessory. Recognizing those drivers helps you reduce cost without weakening the project.

Layout changes multiply work

Moving a sink, range, dishwasher, exterior vent or wall can involve more than one trade and may trigger permits, patching, flooring and cabinet redesign. Keeping major services in place often provides the clearest path to savings.

Cabinet decisions set the scale

Painting, refacing, stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets and custom millwork represent very different scopes. Compare construction, storage fit, panels, hardware, installation and warranty—not only the advertised price per cabinet.

Material price is not installed price

Countertops require measuring, fabrication, edges, cutouts and installation. Tile requires setting materials, labour and waste. Appliances can require circuits, vents, gas work, water lines and cabinet panels.

Schedule and access matter

Tight stairs, condo rules, parking restrictions, occupied homes, remote locations and limited trade availability can raise labour and delivery costs. Ask how access and working hours are reflected in the quote.

Reduce cost deliberately

  • Preserve a workable layout.
  • Keep sound cabinet boxes where practical.
  • Use standard sizes and readily available materials.
  • Select appliances before final cabinet drawings.
  • Limit custom details to places where they solve a real problem.
  • Plan decisions early to reduce rush fees and rework.
