Cabinet doors dominate the view, but the boxes, layout and hardware determine whether a surface treatment will last.
Paint when the structure works
Painting can transform sound wood or suitable manufactured surfaces when they are cleaned, repaired, prepared and coated with compatible products. It does not correct poor storage or water-damaged boxes.
Reface when boxes and layout are sound
Refacing replaces visible doors and applies new material to exposed box surfaces. Compare the cost with new stock cabinetry, especially when many panels, drawers or modifications are required.
Replace when function or structure has failed
Replacement makes sense when boxes are damaged, layout is inefficient, appliance openings change or storage needs require different cabinet sizes.
Do not overlook hardware and interior fittings
Hinges, slides, pulls, waste systems and organizers affect daily use. Upgrade them only when the cabinet can support the new hardware and the cost makes sense.
