How to Compare Kitchen Renovation Quotes

Normalize scope, allowances, exclusions and payment terms before comparing renovation prices.

Three quotes with three different scopes are not three prices for the same project. Build a comparison sheet that makes missing work visible.

Create a scope matrix

List demolition, protection, disposal, cabinets, counters, trades, permits, patching, painting, flooring, appliances, cleanup and warranty. Mark whether each quote includes, excludes or allows for the item.

Normalize allowances

Replace different allowances with the same assumed product budget or add the expected difference. An unrealistically low allowance can make a quote look competitive until selections are made.

Read exclusions carefully

Common exclusions include hazardous materials, structural repair, service upgrades, subfloor repair, permit fees, appliance installation, painting, tax and temporary facilities. Exclusions are not necessarily improper, but they must be budgeted.

Compare payment and change-order terms

Price matters together with deposit, milestones, holdbacks where applicable, change-order markup, warranty and schedule. Use the quote comparison tool to organize totals without pretending the lowest figure is automatically best.
