Countertop choice should begin with how the surface will be used and maintained, then consider appearance. No material is ideal in every category.

Compare behaviour, not just samples
| Material | Strength | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate | Budget-conscious refreshes and broad colour choice | Visible seams, edge damage and limited repair |
| Engineered quartz | Consistent appearance and low routine maintenance | Heat limits, weight and fabrication quality |
| Granite/natural stone | Unique pattern and heat tolerance varies by stone | Sealing, variation and professional fabrication |
| Solid surface | Integrated appearance and repairable scratches | Heat and scratch sensitivity |
| Butcher block | Warmth and renewability | Water management and regular care |
| Porcelain/sintered slab | Thin profiles and heat resistance | Edge chipping risk and specialized fabrication |
Price the installed system
Include template, fabrication, seams, edges, sink and cooktop cutouts, supports, delivery, removal, plumbing reconnection and tax. The slab price alone is not comparable.
Coordinate sink and faucet
The sink model, reveal, faucet holes, accessory rails and disposal or filtration components affect fabrication. Finalize them before cutouts.
Keep realistic samples
View a full slab or larger sample when pattern and variation matter. Small samples can hide movement, scale and seam appearance.
