Electrical, Plumbing and Gas Planning for a Kitchen Remodel

Coordinate appliance specifications, circuits, water, drainage, gas and shutoffs before cabinet drawings are finalized.

The invisible service plan determines whether appliances fit, operate and can be safely maintained. It should be coordinated before cabinetry is ordered.

Do not improvise: Electrical, gas and regulated plumbing work can create fire, shock, explosion, leak and carbon-monoxide hazards. Use qualified trades and required approvals.

Collect appliance specifications

Record voltage, amperage, receptacle, gas, water, drain, ventilation, clearance and shutoff requirements from the current manufacturer documents. Model numbers can change during a project, so confirm the final selection before rough-in.

Plan electrical capacity

Induction ranges, wall ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, refrigerators, lighting and countertop receptacles may require dedicated or revised circuits. A licensed electrical contractor can assess the existing panel and local code requirements.

Make plumbing serviceable

Locate accessible shutoffs, protect drain slope, coordinate dishwasher and refrigerator water lines and confirm the sink base can hold all required components. Avoid burying service points behind fixed organizers.

Treat gas as specialized work

Gas appliance changes require qualified professionals and local compliance. Venting, combustion air and clearances must be evaluated as a system rather than copied from a previous appliance.
