Kitchen Lighting Planning

Layer ambient, task and accent lighting while coordinating colour quality, controls, shadows and electrical work.

A kitchen can have many fixtures and still be poorly lit when the light is behind the person working or the colour quality is inconsistent.

Layer the lighting

  • Ambient light for safe movement and general visibility.
  • Task light over counters, sink, range and work tables.
  • Accent or decorative light used selectively.
  • Low-level night lighting where helpful.

Control shadows

Under-cabinet lighting places light in front of the user and can improve work surfaces dramatically. Ceiling fixtures should be positioned around work zones rather than in a decorative grid that ignores cabinets.

Match colour and dimming

Use compatible drivers, dimmers and colour temperature across fixtures. Review colour rendering when paint, food and finishes matter.

Coordinate electrical work early

Fixture locations, switching, under-cabinet wiring and smart controls should be planned before walls and cabinets are finished. Electrical work may require permits and licensed contractors.
