How to Live Without a Kitchen During Renovation

Plan a temporary kitchen, food storage, cleanup and family routines before the main kitchen is disconnected.

Renovation disruption is easier to manage when the temporary setup is treated as a small functional room rather than a pile of appliances on a table.

Choose a safe location

Use a location with suitable electrical capacity, ventilation, water access and a stable work surface. Keep cooking appliances away from combustible materials and follow manufacturer clearances.

Reduce the menu

Plan meals around a refrigerator, microwave or other permitted small appliances. Batch-cook before demolition and use labelled freezer meals. Avoid creating a temporary system that needs daily washing in a bathroom sink.

Create zones

  • Food and cold storage.
  • Preparation and clean utensils.
  • Cooking appliances.
  • Waste and recycling.
  • Dish collection and washing plan.

Budget the disruption

Include disposable or reusable service items, extra grocery costs, takeout, water access, pet barriers and cleaning supplies. These costs belong in the project budget.
